Project Description

The mid century postwar home represented, to my younger self, a culmination of the American Dream:  Family life set to a backdrop of a juicy pastels, an efficient layout, and a short walk downtown.  Fast forward a decade or two, I found myself with a partner, a new baby and living in my own modest mid century home.  We loved it’s simplicity and crafted-with-love features.  For a family with two home-based businesses, however, more space was needed for everything from guests to work-from-home to breathing room for the not-so-distant teenage years.

The solution was making better use of existing space;  converting the formal living room and kitchen into a great room,  the sunroom into a living room, the basement into a family room, and adding a tiny detached home office/guest house in the back yard.  The update also included a revamp of the front porch, carport, and building systems.  The design celebrates the original home and its irreplaceable features, while introducing daylight and flowing spaces.
